The tennis star is being blamed for the death of Jerome Barson after colliding with his car in early June. Barson's family has now brought a wrongful death case against Williams, claiming she is liable for damages.

A police report said that Williams was to blame for the crash because Barson, who was in the car with his wife at the time, had the right of way.

Now Williams has won an emergency protective order against the Barsons, after applying for it on July 5. It was granted that day. Court records don't specify the reason for the urgency behind Williams' legal action.

People seek protective orders in civil litigation to prevent the opposing party from disclosing certain confidential or sensitive information, and to prevent them from harassing or annoying the other party.

"There are really no words to describe, like, how devastating and -- yeah I'm completely speechless," Williams said at Wimbledon after being asked about the incident. "It's just yeah, I mean, I'm just..." She temporarily left the room before returning to take more questions. "I have no idea what tomorrow will bring. That's all I can say about it. That's what I've learned."
