Fans may recall Funkmaster Flex going off on a tangent last year on social media about certain music stars — including Nicki Minaj — who don’t write their music, claiming they didn’t seem genuine. It put a serious wedge between the rapper and deejay. But in an epic new interview with Hot 97 Radio, the two come together to clear the air and come to mutual ground about what’s really been going on. Read on for the latest.
As seen in this clip, Nicki had still been harboring some feelings about some of the things Funk Flex had said about her and her music in the past, which he was unafraid to address on air. She began by saying that she didn’t even know what his issue was in the first place. “I had no clue what you were mad about,” she told him.
He began simply by saying, “I was being opinionated,” at which Nicki rolled her eyes. He said, “I say opinionated. Would you have used another word?” She said, “Yes, I would have put it in a different way, but since we’re cool again, I’m not going to say…” That’s when he cut her off and asked if she felt he was attacking her. She emphatically said, “Of course, it felt like more than my music.”
That’s when Flex leveled with her: "I've always been a fan of your music. I felt there were a couple of songs that got super commercial ... The one with Drake and Lil Wayne ...I couldn't pinpoint it at the time. Maybe I felt you didn't have it. But now when I hear stuff like "Dreams," and I hear the music now, I may have felt you were getting a little lazy with the music before.”
He even went as far to say, "’Chun-Li’" changed me around, you know, I liked that song.” He confessed that he didn’t want to like her recent music at first, but definitely got into it. "I wanted to front on ‘Chun-Li.’ When I first heard it, I was like 's**t aight.” By the time I got to the end of the highway, I was like 'nah this s**t is kinda knockin'.' By the time I got on the air, I was excited about it."
And Nicki respected that response and said, “I was happy you liked it.” She explained that she doesn’t mind criticism as long as it didn’t come off personal. "Whenever people give me constructive criticism, like if someone tells me 'you could have went harder on that.' I accept things," she said. "I have an issue when the criticism seems like it's personal or from a bad place."
