2010 wasn't a great year for The Challenge host T.J. Lavin.

He crashed his BMX bike, which left him in a coma and almost took his life. As if that wasn't bad enough, he recently revealed that he nearly drowned only a few months later while filming the MTV reality competition series.

The 41-year-old spoke with Las Vegas radio show Flip The Strip about the horrific incident, admitting to still being cloudy about the details to this day because it's only been a few months since his accident and subsequent brain injury.

“I almost drowned out there. There’s a nasty undertow, and I went out into the ocean like nothing, like I was good, and I was like, 'no problem. I’m just going to go out here and go swimming,” he said. “Before I knew it I was like 100 yards off the coast.”

He was able to recall going for a swim during a break in production.

His friend was also in the water when he noticed him struggling.

“He was surfing and he grabbed his surfboard and rushed out there and got me,” he said. “He was like, ‘You’re way far out here, bro,’ and I was like, ‘I couldn’t get back in.’ … We rode the surfboard together into the shore and we kind of just had to go wherever we could, and it ended up in the rocks. It was just a mess. That’s the only thing I remember from Costa Rica.”

He made light of both situations by saying, “These things come in threes, so now I’m still waiting for the other shoe to drop.”

The Challenge: Final Reckoning airs Tuesdays at 9 p.m. ET on MTV.
