‘Bachelorette’ Contestant Garrett Yrigoyen Apologizes For Offensive Instagram Likes
Bachelorette contestant Garrett Yrigoyen took to Instagram on Thursday to apologize for his “hurtful and offensive” past Instagram likes. The likes resulted in fans blasting Garrett, who won the coveted first impression rose during Becca Kufrin’s first Bachelorette episode Monday night.
In the wake of the backlash, Garrett announced he has deleted his previous Instagram account, Garrett_yrigs12, and started a new one so he could “start fresh” after learning “an extremely valuable lesson.”
“I am sorry to those who I offended, and I also take full responsibility for me ‘likes’ on Instagram that were hurtful and offensive,” Garrett wrote in a lengthy statement to fans he shared from his new account, gy_yrigoyen.
“I am not perfect, and I will never be anywhere close, but now I will always be more informed and aware of what I am liking and supporting, not just on Instagram, but in life,” Garrett continued.
Garrett insisted he meant “no harm” by liking pics that mocked feminists, Parkland shooting survivors, and undocumented immigrants.
“My Instagram ‘likes’ were not a true reflection of me and my morals. I am not the negative labels people are associating me with,” Garrett wrote, adding that he is “a sincere, genuine, loving, light-hearted, open-minded and non-judgmental individual.”
“I do not want my social media to define who I am, and I will take better care moving forward to support all walks of life. Again, I sincerely apologize and am sorry for any hurt, damage, or offense I may have caused,” Garrett finished.
