Cory Monteith tragically passed away in a Vancouver hotel room on July 13, but his legacy lives on through Glee and the other projects he took on in pursuit of a successful acting career.

While fans will undoubtedly best remember Cory as Finn Hudson, behind the scenes, the 31-year-old actor was working toward taking his career to the next level with more serious roles.

“He was like, ‘I can do this character, I know this character, I was this character, I have lived elements of this," says McCanick director Josh Waller. “He said, ‘I was a troubled youth.’ He was so charismatic and passionate about the material it was just a combination of everything that made me think this guy was going to do it.”

"He was very vocal about his past, and said he wanted to tap into things from his youth that he hadn't been able to use as an actor yet," says Waller.

Though the director envisioned the role going to "a teeny little drug guy," Cory convinced him he was right for the film.

"When I met with him, he wanted to do it so badly," says Waller.
