Demi Lovato Had A Troubled Relationship With Her ‘Abusive’ Father—Insider Her Struggle

Demi Lovato opened up about her father, Patrick Lovato, in a behind-the-scenes video about her new album, “Confident.” She spoke about how she coped with his death in 2013 and why writing her song titled “Father” was so therapeutic.

“He was mean, but he wanted to be a good person. And he wanted to have his family … He knew he wasn’t capable of raising a family, and it was because of his mental illness,” she said.

The American singer is in Brazil on a flying visit to promote her album Confident, and treated some very lucky fans to a very personal gig in Sao Paulo. Looking like a femme fatale in a sexy black outfit paired with killer red high heels, she seemed to be having a great time as she belted out some of her latest hits to adoring fans. Demi, 23, used her music to process their strained relationship. She confessed, “To know that it wasn’t fully his fault really was saddening to me, and I wanted to write about it. I wanted to process it.”

She honored his memory with a tweet as well writing, “My dad suffered from severe mental illness so at least there’s peace in knowing he’s not suffering anymore.”
