Kanye West Reveals He Had His First Bipolar Blackout At Age 5— Here's How His Mom Donda Responded

Kanye West went on a much-anticipated interview on Jimmy Kimmel Live! on Thursday, August 9, and opened up about having a bipolar disorder and how it affects his music.

He credits his late mother, Donda West, for not medicating him after he “had his first complete blackout” when he was only a little kid. “I think it’s good that when I had my first complete blackout at age 5, my mom didn’t fully medicate me. Because I might have never been ‘Ye,'” he told host Jimmy Kimmel.

The father of three also remarked how having a mental disorder and being black are two things that society should openly talk about. "We never had therapists in the black community. We never approached taking a medication," he said.

The "Power" rapper shared that having this disorder as a "superpower" helps him create his musical masterpieces. Yeezy went on to say how "There’s some cases of bipolar where people go low, I’m one that goes high,” before commenting that he does not have large periods of depression.
