Watch: Lea Thompson Reveals Her Struggles As A Young Woman In A Male-Dominated Entertainment Industry

Lea Thompson has opened up regarding her struggles as a young actress in a male-dominated industry and how that inspired her to direct her first feature film.

She sat down with OK! exclusively to discuss the movie she directed called The Year of Spectacular Men, which happens to star her two daughters Madelyn and Zoey Deutch. Madelyn also wrote the film, making the entire process quite the family affair for the three of them.

The movie centers on the character of Izzy Klein (Madelyn), a recent college grad who struggles to navigate the failures of post-college adulthood and leans on her mother (Lea) and older sister (Zoey) for support.

"For me, it was really important to make this movie because there's not enough content for young women, there's no millennial movies," Lea said when discussing what inspired her to take on the role as director. "This is a unique peek into the inside of a millennial woman's mind."

Another inspiration centers on what she had to go through as a young actress and how she's making it better for her daughters and other women in the entertainment industry today.

"I really wanted to direct it. I felt really strongly about it because when I was an ingénue, I only did parts that were written by men. They were writing about their dream girl, you know, they really weren't even writing about a real person in a lot of ways, so I felt really strongly about telling this story."

The Year of Spectacular Men is in limited theaters currently and available on several streaming services.
