Legend Lives On: New Show Remembers Tupac’s Groundbreaking Career Before Death

Tupac Amaru Shakur is known as one of the greatest rappers of all time, over 20 years after his mysterious death. During his golden years, the hip hop artist became immersed in an ongoing East Coast vs. West Coast rap battle with nemesis Biggie Smalls. The musical feud took place both in Hollywood and on the streets — and only grew when Tupac was robbed and shot by a criminal in 1994. The dispute sadly ended in the tragic murders of both beloved icons.

As OK! readers know, The Notorious B.I.G. was gunned down on March 9, 1997, while Tupac was killed a year earlier in Las Vegas.

“So this is it. This is where Tupac took that famous picture with Mike Miller — and like Miller’s like a West Coast legend photographer,” West Coast hip-hop artist, Gizzle, says in REELZ’s It Happened Here: Tupac’s Iconic Photo Shoot show teaser. “He shot so many album covers and things back then so the picture that Tupac took here is kind of significant because you can kind of see, not only his attitude, but also like his easy-goingness.”

Speaking to REELZ, the female artist toured the hidden set of train tracks in Vernon, California where Tupac did his historic photo shoot. The show staff later travelled to New York City’s Quad Recording Studios, where a 1994 attempted murder on Tupac ignited the biggest feud in the history of rap.

“It’s a beautiful thing when you can kind of just find art in like the most unlikely places in the city. This is hip hop right here. It’s like the epitome of hip hop. it’s taking something that’s so basic… like this warehouse wall, and making it into something iconic, like a picture that’ll live forever. That’s what Tupac and Mike were able to do here. They made something out of nothing… that’s so hip hop,” adds Gizzle.

Notorious BIG & Tupac Shakur: It Happened Here airs Saturday, March 31 at 10 ET / PT on REELZ.
