James Farentino died of heart failure Tuesday in L.A. after sufferring a long illness. He was 73 years old.
Family spokesman Bob Palmer confirmed the sad news to The Los Angeles Times.

The actor may be best known for his role on Dynasty, but younger readers may remember him as George Clooney's estranged father on ER. James was a contract performer with Universal Studios in the 1960s.
While his roles (nearly 100 of them) earned him attention, his personal life became the focus in his later years.

In 1994, he pleaded no contest to stalking Frank Sinatra's youngest daughter, Tina Sinatra, his off-and-on girlfriend. James was placed on three years' probation and ordered to undergo psychiatric and alcohol counseling.That same year he married Stella, his fourth wife.
