Matthew McConaughey has gone from King of the rom-com, to stripper boss, to Academy Award winner. In an exclusive interview with OK! Magazine, the 44-year-old Texan talks about his new movie, Interstellar (which is already generating Oscar buzz!), his family, his wife Camila Alves’ influence on his career, and why he’s shifted from rom-com to drama.
On quitting rom-coms: “After Ghosts of Girlfriends Past, I knew I didn’t want to make any more romantic comedies. I was about to turn 40 and didn’t want to waste my time making a movie that I didn’t feel passionate about. It was a little nerve-wracking to turn down roles that paid a lot of money, but pretty soon word got out not to bother sending me those kinds of scripts.”
On his relationship with Camila: “Before I met Camila, I was a bit of a wild boy. She tamed me instantly.”
On being an actor: “I thought I was going to be a lawyer. Then I read The Greatest Salesman in the World, and realized I wanted to make films, to tell stories.”
