Jewel Takes Marriage Seriously
Sept. 5 2008, Published 12:00 p.m. ET
Don’t expect the marriage of Jewel and Ty Murray to be a passing phase. The couple wed in August after dating for a decade.
“In Hollywood, it’s almost like a wedding ring is an accessory they want for awhile and then they get tired of it and they just take it off,” she says.
But the 34-year-old singer didn’t enter into this commitment without thinking long-term.
“Me and Ty always feel like marriage is the most serious thing a person can do. Granted, we move slower than most people, but we’ve really taken a long time to get to know each other and make sure we can stay in love year after year. Marriage can be heaven or hell and it’s up to you which one it is.”
The couple who plays together stays together, but that doesn’t mean it’s always perfect.
“Ty and I were bucking bulls at the ranch – as most couples do – and this kid was there on this bull and he bailed off a bit early. He scrambled out of the way. I thought it was my turn to pipe up and go ‘I could’ve rode that bull.’ I’m not allowed to say it. Ty can say it, but when I say it, it’s not funny. He looks at me makes mean face and I go makes please forgive me face and I’m like ‘I didn’t mean it.’”
