Those big moments in life never goes as smoothly as they do in the movies -- even when you're a gorgeous TV star.

In their first interview together since they got engaged in Las Vegas on New Years Eve, Maksim Chmerkovskiy says his proposal to fellow Dancing With The Stars dancer, Karina Smirnoff, was nearly a disaster!

"It was the most perfect proposal ever, yet the most disastrous proposal ever," Karina told The Insider.

The problem, says Maksim, was that he'd done the ground work, but when the time came, he blurted out the wrong thing.

"I started with, 'I've been with a lot of women,'" he admitted. Ouch!

"My big advice to guys out there is to write it down and practice your speech!," he said.

But in the end, he must have done something right.

"He gave me a beautiful, limited edition Louis Vuitton bag," gushed Karina.

"The box with the ring was inside and I thought it was the receipt or something! When I opened the box, I freaked out and closed it again.

"I re-opened the box and he still wasn't saying anything! He tried to form sentences but nothing would come out. We both stood there staring at the ring."

As for wedding details, the couple say they haven't begun planning, but hope to marry this year.
