In order to better understand how sex toys work and open the door for a conversation surrounding sexuality, we spoke with Love Honey’s certified sex educator Javay Frye-Nekrasova, MEd, also known as Javay da BAE, MEd, or The Millennial Sexpert. Nekrasova works as a sex educator, content creator, pleasure professional, academic and media personality. As a sex educator, her work focuses on comprehensive, inclusive, accessible sex education for all, and her areas of expertise are pleasure, communication and sex toys.

What are the most popular misconceptions surrounding sex toys?

Nekrasova explains to Morning Honey that one of the most popular misconceptions surrounding toys is that they can make you desensitized or uninterested in your partner. However, that’s far from true.

A part of the misconception associated with it is due to the subject matter being taboo and socially unacceptable to discuss. “Our society has so deeply engrained sexual shame that it stems even to sex toys," she says.

She adds, “So many of us were taught that sex and pleasure were bad things and shouldn’t be engaged in let alone talked about, and it is really difficult to unlearn something you have heard for so much of your life. I think it is also taboo because so much of our society glosses over or ignores sexual pleasure.”

With changing how we all think about and discuss toys, Nekrasova recommends that we “​​think of sex toys as a spice cabinet of your sexual pleasure; they add some variety. “

Where do you even start sex toys?

With vibrators not being a part of day-to-day conversations, it can be hard to know where to begin. Nekrasova says that a "great way to introduce toys into your sexual pleasure is by starting small and working your way up.
