Alan Cumming Becomes a Citizen!

Nov. 11 2008, Published 2:00 p.m. ET
Alan Cumming returns to LOGO’s hilarious animated series Rick & Steve: The Happiest Gay Couple In All the World tonight a changed man. Last Friday, the Scottish native was sworn in as an American citizen.
"I'm so excited," Alan told me during a chat right before his naturalization ceremony.
The icing on the cake? That he's coming in under the upcoming regime of President-Elect Barack Obama. "I might have skipped beinf sworn in if he hadn't won," jokes Alan, who was a big supporter of Obama campaign, even before earning the right to vote in the U.S.
Learning all about American history wasn't easy. "I have trouble remembering who wrote 'The Star Spangled Banner'," he admits. (And for the rest of us who just forgot? It's Francis Scott Key!)
But Alan still aced his naturalization test with flying colors. "You have to get six out of ten questions right," he explains. "I got the first six right off the bat."
And he'll never forget the sentence he had to write to prove he had a grasp on the English language. "I bought a blue car today," he recites. "I think it's just so funny that right away it's about commerce."

One thing hasn't changed. On Rick & Steve, Alan’s alter ego, Chuck, is still a 50-year-old, wisecracking who says the most darndest things.
“I just think Jerry Stiller, but gay and in a wheelchair,” Alan laughs.
Rick & Steve: The Happiest Gay Couple in All the World, airs Tuesday, Nov. 11, 10 pm on LOGO.
