News of their divorce has shocked everyone, and now Ashlee Simpson and Pete Wentz have released a joint statement about their decision to split.

"After careful consideration, we have made the difficult decision to file for divorce," the couple said in a joint statement, via E! News. "We remain friends and deeply committed and loving parents to our son Bronx, whose happiness and well-being remains our number one priority. We ask that everyone honor our privacy as we navigate this next phase of our lives."

Ashlee filed for divorce in L.A., citing "irreconcilable differences."

The singer married the Fall Out Boy frontman in May 2008 in an intimate ceremony at her parents’ L.A. home.
