'Avatar' & 'Star Trek' Among 7 Films Vying for Visual Effects Oscar Noms

Oscar is coming to town! The Hollywood Foreign Press announced today that Avatar, Star Trek, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, District 9, Terminator Salvation and 2012 are the seven films chosen to compete for three nomination spots in the the visual-effects Academy Award category.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences visual-effects branch will view 15-minute excerpts from each of the seven films on Jan. 21, then vote to choose three nominees for the Oscars on March 7, the Associated Press reports.

Last year, Benjamin Button took home the golden man for Visual effects, beating out The Dark Knight and Iron Man.
The full slate of Oscar nominees will be announced on Feb. 2.
