"Bert and Ernie are best friends," the show wrote on their Facebook page. "They were created to teach preschoolers that people can be good friends with those who are very different from themselves."

While they may be associated on the show as male, Sesame Street wants to make it clear that they are just puppets — for those who forget.

"Even though they are identified as male characters and possess many human traits and characteristics (as most Sesame Street Muppets do), they remain puppets, and do not have a sexual orientation."

Despite Sesame Street's statement, there is still the Facebook page Bert and Ernie Get Married where fans are having a heated debate about the pros and cons have Bert and Ernie getting married.

While some fans may want to see the friends marry, Sesame Street sounds set in their decision that Bert and Ernie have been and will always be just friends.
