Betty White: I’m Just Lucky
June 22 2010, Published 12:00 p.m. ET
Now that Betty White is experiencing a career resurgence at age 88, I had to find out: What keeps her hot after all these years?
“I have no idea if such a thing is true, but if it is, I’m just lucky,” the Hot In Cleveland star humbly tells me with a chuckle.
Despite her star stature, the Golden Girls icon -- who hosted Saturday Night Live last month -- admits her age is starting to show.
“I have a two-story house and a very bad memory,” she says. “I’m up and down those stairs all the time. ‘What did I come up here for? What should I have brought down here?’”
But one thing that keeps her young is her friendship with her Proposal co-star Sandra Bullock, who adopted a son earlier this year.
"She's so great," Betty says. "She's a very special lady."
The actress, who has been in showbiz for a whopping 65 years, shares her biggest life lesson.
“Just be honest,” Betty tells me. “Don’t try to be somebody you’re not. Just be yourself, and hope for the best.”

“I’m in the middle of a book that’s due this fall, and I haven’t been doing much writing lately -- as you can plainly see,” Betty tells me. “I’ve gotta finish that before I get on to something else.”
Although the premiere of her TV Land sitcom was the most-watched telecast ever in the network’s history, she rules out Broadway.
“That’s too much of a time commitment,” she says. “I love working and moving on. If your show’s a failure, you’re a failure. If your show’s a hit, you’re a stud for life.”
Kristen Chenoweth stars with Betty in the forthcoming fall comedy You Again. She offers high praise.
“First of all, it’s nice not to have to crane my neck to look up,” she tells me with a laugh. “Second of all, working with a comedic genius only makes you better. Watching her was great -- her professionalism the entire shoot. Never once was she like ‘Can I go home?’ Never once. The oldest person on set, and the first one in and the last one out if need be. That’s her.”
Today co-host Hoda Kotb is also in awe of Miss White.
“I adore her,” she says. “I feel like there’s something about having the second go-around. All of us women look at it and it makes us so excited to know just how long the runway is for us.”
Hmm, what’s Betty’s favorite thing to do in Cleveland?
“I worked summer stock there, but I haven’t stopped long enough to analyze it, to tell you the truth.”
Hot In Cleveland airs Wednesdays at 10/9c on TV Land.
