On March 9, 1997, the rap world lost one of its legends when Biggie Smalls, or Notorious B.I.G., was shot by an unknown person in a drive-by shooting in L.A. Today, on the 14th anniversary of his death, his close friend Diddy remembers the talented young rapper with some help from the Twitterverse where the hashtag #BIGGIE DAY has been created in his memory.
Biggie was born Christopher George Latore Wallace on May 21, 1972, and released his debut album Ready to Die in 1994. After his debut, he became one of the top rappers in the East Coast hip-hop scene and a close friend/collaborator with rap mogul Sean Combs, aka Puff Daddy, as he was known at the time.
While recording his second album, Biggie was heavily involved in the East Coast/West Coast hip-hop feud which controlled the rap movement in the '90s.
He was shot down and killed at the age of 25 during a drive-by shooting in L.A. and it is believed to have been a part of the feud.
Life After Death, his second double album released 15 days later, and was No. 1 on the U.S. album charts, reaching a certified Diamond in 2000 – a rare recognition for an album to achieve.
One of Biggie's closest friends, Diddy, has been Tweeting about the rapper all day, and even changed his Twitter picture to a photo of Biggie as well as hit Twitter background. Biggie was signed to Diddy's then new label, Bad Boy Records.
"Today is #BIGGIEDAY – send me all your videos, links, photos, exclusive content...ALL things BIGGIE so I can RT to the world!!" Diddy Tweeted followed by a string of Tweets remembering the rapper.
