"Blaine will openly question whether bisexuality is real," Glee creator, Ryan Murphy, tells Out magazine about Darren's Glee role. "I think that some people will love that discussion and some will not love it."
While Darren plays a gay character on the show, he says he felt it was important to share with fans he himself is not gay.
At first, Darren had planned to respond to the "Are you gay?" question by saying something vague like "It doesn't matter if I'm gay or straight — I'm playing a role."

"I think it's more empowering to everybody, including myself, if I'm articulate about identifying myself as a straight male playing a gay character," he tells Out. "Ultimately, that's more powerful for both communities."
