Elton John shakes my hand during the world premiere of his documentary The Union at the opening night of the Tribeca Film Festival held Wednesday at The Winter Garden at the World Financial Plaza in NYC.

Despite his status as a true rock legend, he seems completely down-to-earth and genuine when he confesses he’s nervous about seeing the Cameron Crowe-directed documentary about his life.

Interestingly, Whoopi Goldberg championed this project.

“Well, my manager in America, Johnny Barbis, is big friends with Whoopi as am I, and she waved the flag for us,” Elton says.

“I can’t believe we’re here at opening night of Tribeca with this project that we just filmed because we wanted to put it on record for ourselves. Cameron wanted to do this so badly because he was a big fan of Leon Russell, like myself, and we had no idea we’d end up at the opening night of Tribeca, but it’s very exciting, and I haven’t seen it yet, so I’m really nervous.”

After he gives me the scoop on his royal wedding plans (in the OK! out next week!), he shakes my hand, saying “How are you? You’re sweet. Good to see you.”

Wow!

The Tribeca Film Festival takes place in NYC through May 1.
