On the Road has a lot of pressure to accurately portray Jack Kerouac's bestseller on the big screen, but Garrett makes it sound like they did a good job.
Garrett plays Dean Moriarty in the film, Kristen as his "sexually adventurous" young wife, Marylou and Sam Riley as Sal Paradise.
"He grew up in the streets of Denver with a wino father who was a barber he could never find," Garrett told the Los Angeles Times of his character, who is based on the real-life Neal Cassady. "He spent time in pool halls trying to scrounge up money, and his teen years in juvenile hall because of all the cars he stole."
"Times are a little different," The Country Strong star said of the half-century time change from when the book was written. "Things are different on the road. There are more cars and fewer hitchhikers. But there’s still jazz, women and drugs."

The film was a long time coming, but Garrett says the filming was free-spirited.
In one scene, Garrett drove a 1949 Hudson Hornet in a blizzard in the Andes while wearing goggles and screaming out of his window! Director Walter Salles, meanwhile, was sitting in the passenger seat holding a camera!
"Improv was highly welcomed, to make scenes flow and have a rhythm," Garrett explained about the filming of On the Road. "We had the freedom to fly."
