The stars shine at the Trade premiere, which is held at the United Nations building.

Helena Christensen swans in, saying “I’m not answering any questions.” Hm, like the one about dating Heath Ledger? Kerry Washington, Sigourney Weaver and Phoebe Cates scoot by, but the movie’s star, Kevin Kline, says he kicked back with a glass of wine every night after filming the crime drama that tackles the heavy subject of sex trafficking.

Mira Sorvino and Bijou Phillips tell me they’re here tonight to raise awareness about the criminal industry that afflicts 2.5 million people worldwide.

“Last year there were 10,000 women and children in NYC who were sold into sex trafficking,” Bijou says. “To me, that just seems insane and unfair. A lot of people don’t realize it could happen in the apartment next door to your apartment; it could be in your building. It’s all about education. We can save lives.”

What’s the greatest stride women have made during Gloria Steinem’s time? “Knowing we’re not crazy,” she tells me. “In the sixties and seventies, if you stood up and said ‘women should get the same salaries,’ you’d hear ‘no, women just work for pin money.’ There was an idea that it was biology. If you thought differently, you were regarded as crazy, so you felt crazy. Knowing that we’re sane and the majority supports us is a huge difference.”

Trade hits theaters September 28.
