Aug. 26 2018, Updated 12:05 a.m. ET
Senator and Veteran John McCain has died at the age of 81.
“Senator John Sidney McCain III died at 4:28pm on August 25, 2018," a statement from his office read. "With the Senator when he passed were his wife Cindy and their family. At his death, he had served the United States of America faithfully for sixty years.”
John was diagnosed with brain cancer in July of 2017. His family announced that he had decided to discontinue medical treatment for the glioblastoma, an aggressive form of said cancer, on Friday, August 24th.
He had surpassed expectations for his survival, but "the progress of disease and the inexorable advance of age render their verdict," the statement said.
John was strong enough to attend the wedding of his daughter Meghan to her husband Ben Domenech in November of last year. May he rest in peace.

Cindy opened up about her husband's passing on Saturday evening, tweeting "My heart is broken. I am so lucky to have lived the adventure of loving this incredible man for 38 years. He passed the way he lived, on his own terms, surrounded by the people he loved, in the place he loved best."
