Whitney passed away just mere months after filming wrapped, and Jordin reveals that Whitney was always an inspiration to her. She even acted like a mother to the cast on-set.
"She would call us her babies," Jordin revealed to ETOnline. "It was so amazing to be able to see that 'cause she was so humble... She wanted to see all of us shine."
What was it like for Jordin to be the star of a film, with Whitney playing her mother?
"For somebody with that star power to see younger women coming up and essentially wanting to take her place and do the same thing she did— she was okay with that. For us to be able to see that example was really, really amazing."

Sparkle tells the story of three sisters, played by Jordin, Carmen Ejogo and Tika Sumpter, rising to fame in the '60s and was originally a 1976 movie starring Irene Cara, but not much was changed for the new version.
The first single from the film's soundtrack "Celebrate" is the last song recorded by Whitney before she died on February 11, a duet with Jordin.
The movie hits theaters on August 17.
