Jordin Sparks was all set to perform a song from her upcoming film Sparkle at the Essence Black Women in Hollywood Luncheon last night, but after news broke of her costar Whitney Houston's shocking death, the American Idol winner decided to do something a bit more meaningful.

“I was already going to sing a song from the movie and everything like that, and then all recent events happened. Now I’m going to be singing a song that she actually sang, but is also in the movie, from the original, it’s called ‘Look Into Your Heart,’” Jordin explained to Access Hollywood as she mentally prepared herself to perform for an audience consisting of Oscar-nominated stars like Viola Davis and Octavia Spencer at the Beverly Hills Hotel.

Jordin, who admits she was "very emotional" when she found out about Whitney's passing, took to the stage last night to say a few words about the "incredible woman" who she "looked up to."

"The first day she got to the set she's scolding me, and I'm thinking this is the best day ever," Jordin told the audience. "She went from being this unreachable supernova pop star to my costar, friend and someone who was like a mentor to me. It was a gift and an honor to play opposite Whitney Houston in the film."

What a special moment. We can't wait to see Sparkle in August 2012.
