Lady Gaga & Cher Make Big Announcement: "Duet...Surprise!"

Mother Monster is gearing up for a powerhouse collaboration with the ultimate music icon Cher! The two divas are joining generations together the best way they know how — with a duet! That's right! Lady Gaga and Cher are slated to release a single together.

Cher turned to her Twitter to share the big news, writing "Can hardly wait 4 GT 2 Come Out! Was XCITED 'Bout Making New cd, But Wasn't Expecting BIG Surprises...& THEN...... SURPRISE ! GAGA ! DUET !"

Gaga also shared her excitement about the collaboration on Twitter!

"Who knew a year ago when I was crying in her arms after she gave me an award, that today we would record a duet. @Cher You are The Greatest." Gaga Tweeted, referring to receiving the Video of the Year award that Cher presented to her onstage during the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards.

The single, called "The Greatest Thing," is set to debut next month, and is the first track off Cher’s upcoming album, Radar Online reports.

Gaga will be opening up the ceremony this year at the VMAs, where she's up for four awards: Best Female Video and Best Video With a Message for "Born This Way;" and Best Art Direction and Best Choreography for "Judas."

The 2011 MTV Video Music Awards air live on MTV and MTV.com from Los Angeles' Nokia Theater on Sunday, August 28 at 9 p.m.!
