Lake Bell cuddles on the floor with a shelter dog wearing an orange “adopt me” vest during ASPCA’s Bergh Ball held this week at The Plaza in NYC. Like the pooch urgently seeking a home, the actress’ pitbull, Margaret, also hailed from a shelter, and often shocks with her anything-but-dangerous demeanor.

“She is one of the gentlest, kindest creatures I’ve ever come into contact with,” the star, 32, tells me with a smile. “I got her nine years ago, and her personality is so funny because she fancies herself as a cockapoo. When people see her, because she has cropped ears and she looks scary, they cross the street. She looks at me like I’m the one with the problem! She has no idea why anyone would be afraid of her. She’s definitely the kind of dog – even if you’re terrified of dogs – you’d end up cuddling with her at the end of the night.”

While having a dog might seem like a great way to kick-start a fitness routine, Lake’s precious pup prefers to lounge out.

“Poor Margaret. She’s a little bit round. She’s voluptuous, OK? She is not a runner, and nor is her mother, but we find solace in each other laughs and we do try to walk a bit, but we are not runners. We don’t go and play doggie soccer on the weekends.”

Lake prefers to shower Margaret with attention.

“Every day I spoil her with love and being there for her,” she says. “Especially with dogs that are on doggie death row, or even walking down the street, you see someone be aggressive with the dog - I think it’s a blessing to have her, and our relationship goes both ways. It’s two-sided. She gives me great love, and I return that favor.”

ASPCA raises over $1 million to prevent animal cruelty during their annual Bergh Ball. For more about this event, pick up the OK! on newsstands this week. The cover line is "Teen Mom: Leah & Corey Fight For The Twins."
