Since reports have surfaced that Mel Gibson allegedly punched his former girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva, the L.A. Sheriff's Department is opening up an investigation.

"Detectives are currently gathering information regarding the allegations," Lt. Richard Erickson, a department spokesman, told E! News. "Due to the investigation being preliminary in nature, no other information is available at this time."
