Michelle Williams on Oscar Nomination: "My Success as a Parent Is What Matters Most to Me"

Michelle Williams appeared on the Today show this morning to chat about her Oscar nomination for her role in My Week With Marilyn. The mother of one was so busy getting her daughter ready for school that she missed the big announcement. Still, she gives her daughter credit for earning her the nomination.
Michelle's name was the last to be called for Best Actress in a Leading Role, but she wasn't even watching it on TV.
"I was with friends. It had slipped my mind, which is something so great about having a kid," Michelle explained to Ann Curry on Today. "You get really absorbed, especially mornings. You've got to get out the door, make breakfast, get the snowsuit on, get everybody in the car, carpooling. Then I stopped at a friend's house to have breakfast. I was outside examining something in nature, a stone structure, and she opened up the door with her baby on her hip and said, 'Michelle, they just called your name on TV.' "

"It slipped my mind," she said with a laugh. "I was in a rush, in my routine of the day. It was a very sweet way to hear it."

This is Michelle's third Oscar nomination. She won a Golden Globe for this role earlier this month, and gave an emotional speech dedicated to her daughter, Matilda. She did it again on Today (we teared up a bit) when she explained why her daughter, whom she had with the late Heath Ledger, deserves credit for her receiving the Oscar nomination.
"She gives me balance," Michelle said. "I know that any risks that I take in my work are actually, in a way, they're safe because nothing really bad can happen there. And my success as a parent is what matters the most to me."
