OK! Travel: Bountiful Bahamas
Jan. 11 2010, Published 3:00 p.m. ET
Jennifer Aniston, Nicole Kidman, Elle Macpherson and Uma Thurman have been tickled pink about the Bahamas’ best-kept secret — a luxurious beach haven just an hour’s flight from Miami. Blush-sand beaches and warm, turquoise waters make tiny Harbour Island’s three-mile beach a must-see for even the most discerning sunseekers.
A PRIVATE PARADISE
The 25 pastel-colored cottages at the Pink Sands retreat offer absolute seclusion amid 20 acres of lush tropical gardens (rates from $750; pinksandsresort.com). California king- sized beds, flat-screen TVs and private patios are a hit with honeymooners — and the pool, with its luxe cabanas, is breathtaking. If you can bear to part with your lounge chair, state-of-the-art tennis courts are available day and night. Fine dining abounds at the Garden Terrace restaurant, which showcases local favorites like conch chowder and coconut-crusted mahi-mahi. For a more casual alternative, head to Blue Bar, which serves the island’s only Japanese fare.
HIDDEN TREASURES
The waters surrounding Harbour Island make for excellent swimming and snorkeling. At Current Cut, one of the world’s top dive sites, you can get nose to nose with eagle rays and turtles. Back on dry land (the island measures 3 1/2 miles long by 1/2 a mile wide), golf carts are the most popular way to get around and can be rented for around $45 per day. For a night on the town, leave your heels at home and head north to Gusty’s, a hot-spot for visitors and locals. Late-night partygoers can twist the night away at Vic-Hum, where owner Humphrey Percentie Jr. is eager to share stories about the famous folks who’ve grooved on his dance floor.
