While Jennifer Lopez was left shocked and in tears when Pia Toscano was eliminated on American Idol last week, executive producer Nigel Lythgoe wasn't surprised toe see the New York singing sensation sent packing. Nigel recently shared with the public that according to the results Pia was "never a frontrunner."

“I know the voting results, so I know she was never a frontrunner,” Nigel revealed in an on-camera interview with Yahoo! Music‘s Reality Rocks, via Entertainment Weekly. “The fact of the matter is that it appears that Pia didn’t connect with the audience as much as we maybe think she did. And she wasn’t voted through.”

Nigel also revealed that Idol may change the voting methods — possible a direct result from the uproar caused by Pia's elimination.

According to EW, Nigel said he could see Idol changing the voting format next season to a format similar to another one of his shows So You Think You Can Dance, where America would determine the bottom three but the judges would still choose who left the show.
