Biggest Loser host Alison Sweeney shows off an enviable bikini bod on the cover of Shape Magazine out now.

One key ingredient to her sleek physique involves cutting out processed sugar and artificial sweeteners. Plus, she cut back on cane sugar and corn syrup.

“I don’t miss it,” the married mom of two, 36, tells me during an event celebrating her cover-star status held at The Culinary Loft in NYC.That means fruits, I still have. Blueberries are super-sweet. You get used to tasting it, and then you don’t miss the artificial sweetener.”

Instead of decadent desserts, Alison relies on natural fruit.

“My favorite snack is Greek yogurt with blueberries, cinnamon and agave nectar,” she says. “I don’t believe in depriving yourself. It’s important to feel like you’re satisfied so that your whole life, you can stick to the same plan. You’re not sitting there, constantly torturing yourself. For me, it’s about finding that balance.”

Hm, what would she tell someone who hopes to ditch their junk food vices?

“I think it’s about learning portions, so maybe don’t cut it out—just have fewer french fries with your lunch.”

She continues, “The other trick would be to eat it last. Eat something healthy, have a glass of water, fill yourself up on the healthy choices, and then if you‘re still craving whatever it is, have a little bit. But maybe you’ll have less of it because you’re not as hungry.”

Of course, the goal is to prevent binge-eating.

“I think people make the mistake of starving themselves because they know they shouldn’t eat something bad, but then when it gets in front of them, and they are so tempted they can’t take it, then they eat too much of it.”

She adds, “They eat twice as much as they maybe would have if they had just given into it earlier, and planned into it accordingly.”

During the event, Alison demonstrates her chicken with dried cherries recipe from her book, The Mommy Diet, which guests receive in addition to a copy of her just-released novel The Star Attraction. It’s a juicy read inspired by her Hollywood adventures. Can't wait!
