Ricky Gervais Golden Globes 2011: Comic Hits Hollywood Hard in Opening Monologue

From attacks on Charlie Sheen and Mel Gibson, to a couple of crude jabs at Hugh Hefner to addressing the Golden Globes backlash for nominating Angelina Jolie, Johnny Depp and The Tourist, Ricky Gervais hit Hollywood hard with his opening monologue. The host went for it from the beginning, toting a beer with him up to the podium and taking on Tinseltown with full force!
As host, Ricky wasn't trying to be playful — he was gutsy and out for blood.
"It's going to be a night of partying and heavy drinking," Ricky began in his opening monologue. "Or, as Charlie Sheen calls it, breakfast."
After Charlie, The Tourist blows hit: "I'd like to quash the rumors that the only reason The Tourist was nominated was so that the Hollywood Foreign Press can hang out with Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie. That is rubbish, that is not the only reason. They also accepted bribes."
As the celebs in the audience began to squirm, Ricky then directed his biting humor at Scientology.
"Also not nominated, I Love You Phillip Morris. Jim Carrey and Ewan McGregor. Two heterosexual actors pretending to be gay, so the complete opposite of some famous Scientologists then."
Ricky even offered Hugh Hefner's 24-year-old fiancée Crystal Harris, some advice: "Just don't look at it."
Throughout the show, the hard-hitting jokes lived on. Ricky called Bruce Willis "Ashton Kutcher's dad," introduced Robert Downey Jr. by referencing his Internet porn flick and his past struggle with addiction and also alluded that cast members of Sex and the City 2 were old enough to have appeared in Bonanza.
Ricky even made time to jab at Philip Berk, the president of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, with some low blows suggesting Berk needed help off the toilet and assistance putting in his dentures.
But Berk wasn't amused: "Ricky, next time you want me to help you qualify your movie, go to another guy."
And our beloved Robert Pattinson was upstaged long with Olivia Wilde before they presented best foreign film together.
Rob, who looked a bit nervous at delivering his lines, was introduced by Ricky, who quipped: "Our next presenters are young and thin, with hair and teeth... they're lovely to look at.

"Which is just as well, because they're presenting the award for best foreign language film. A category that no one in America cares about."
Before his hosting debut last night, Ricky told the U.K. Press Association that he wasn't going to take it east on Tinseltown.
"I think I'll go just close enough to the edge but not go over it," he said. "I'm not worried about the celebrities, they're alright, they're not scary!"
