According to Deadline Hollywood, Saoirse (known for Atonement, The Lovely Bones and Hanna) is set to play Melanie Stryder in the highly-anticipated film, scripted by Andrew Niccol.

Melanie is one of the last humans fighting against an alien species called Souls, which are parasites that invade human bodies and erase their personalities, Deadline reports of the plot. She gets captured by an alien and implanted by a Soul named Wanderer, whose goal is to make Melanie surrender the rest of the humans. Melanie, however, is unwilling to surrender her consciousness and the alien starts to reconnect with Melanie's old life.

Stephenie made a deal with producers Nick Wechsler and Steve and Paula Mae Schwartz two years ago to make a screen adaptation of the book,  and was very hands-on with Niccol during the process.

Niccol may also direct the film and Inferno will present the project to buyers at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival next week.
