The 28-year-old wanted to play the role of Fantine in the Oscar-nominated movie Les Miserables, but was so ill she barely had a voice.
"I auditioned with laryngitis," she told Broadway.com. "I did everything I could to, like, not have laryngitis."
She added: "I sang my little heart out," but she's not bitter the part went to Anne Hathaway who is now up for an Academy Award for her portrayal of the character.
"I think, looking at the film now, there's no possible way I ever could have topped that performance," she says of Anne's work. "It was perfect and I think fateful and meant to be."
