Just 26 days after her shocking attempt to take her own life, troubled Teen Mom star Amber Portwood seemed happy and carefree as she took an afternoon stroll in Los Angeles on July 10, stopping along the way to play with some puppies at a pet adoption center, reports Star in this week's issue.

But Amber, 21, wasn't alone on her jaunt. A young woman, her companion assigned by the Malibu rehab center Amber entered on June 24, was by her side — part of the day-to-day routine that's getting her back on track, friends tell Star.

"Amber's on a 90-day rehab stay, and she's really making an effort to pull herself together," says a source. " Her rehab is for anger, depression and bipolar disorder, and so far, she's doing really well." Another close friend tells Star that Amber had been getting medication, "but now they're weaning her off it because of her progress. Everything seems to be going smoothly."
