Still a Chance 'Eclipse' Could Out Sell 'New Moon'

Twilight Saga: Eclipse has now officially made $176.4 million over the weekend and Summit Entertainment says the film has a "good shot" of eclipsing New Moon in it's $296.6 million year earning.

"I think we have a real good shot at it after this first week," Richie Fay, Summit's distribution leader told MTV News. "We're not disappointed in this gross at all. It's where we expected to be, and it hopefully gets us north of New Moon."

Eclipse and New Moon are about equal in total box-office sales after seven days, but was just short after six days.

But Summit Entertainment says they're more concerned about giving fans what they want rather than Eclipse topping New Moon.

"If we lost the audience to some degree over the weekend to barbecues and fireworks, they will probably come back," Fay explained. "It's kind of like a tsunami audience. As soon as they've finished viewing 'New Moon' in the theaters, then the DVD comes out, and right after that, 'Eclipse' comes out. We're servicing that audience very nicely."
