Tom Hardy "Broke Ribs" & Joel Edgerton "Blew Out His Knee" While Filming 'Warrior'

Tom Hardy and Joel Edgerton were so dedicated to their roles in Warrior as mixed martial arts competitors that they even took a few punches themselves just to make it look real.

Director Gavin O'Connor recently chatted with E! News about the making of Warrior.

"It was intense," he said. "We were trying not to act. That was the goal."

Warrior tells the story of two brothers (Tom and Joel) who face off in the mixed marital arts ring.

So just how intense did the shooting of the film get?

"Joel blew out his knee. He tore his ACL," the director revealed. "Tommy broke ribs, a finger and toes. A lot of black eyes."

Warrior opens in theaters Sept. 9!
