Although Billy Crystal's name is being tossed around as possibly hosting the Oscars again, another Saturday Night Live alumni comedian's name is also in the mix. That would be none other than Eddie Murphy! Apparently the host of the 84th Academy Awards ceremony may be named as early as this week.
According to E! News, a decision could be made as early as tomorrow when the show's producers, Brett Ratner and Don Mischer, meet with the president of the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences, Tom Sherak. In fact, Eddie's name has been on their minds for a while to host the annual awards show.
In addition to his comedic chops and career as a stand-up comic and cast member of SNL, Brett and Eddie became friends when he directed the Shrek star in Eddie's upcoming action movie with Ben Stiller called Tower Heist.
An insider told Deadline that Eddie actually workships the Oscars. “Nobody knows movies better or is a bigger cinephile than Eddie. Not Brett. Not even Quentin Tarantino. Eddie can quote scenes from every single movie word for word. The source added, “He can bring all that experience to hosting."
