Woody Harrelson’s estranged father, Charles Harrelson, spent most of his life in prison after being found guilty of a series of crimes including the murder of judge John H. Wood Jr. in 1979. And while the actor started off hoping that his criminal dad was innocent in the murder case, the truth eventually spilled out, leaving him to create his own path, as a Hollywood star — without Charles.

Now, REELZ’s new docuseries, Geraldo Rivera’s Murder In the Family: Woody Harrelson looks back at their rocky father-son relationship, letting viewers see that while Woody was nothing like his dad, he too had a secret run-in with the law!

“As the story makes national news, Woody Harrelson turns a blind eye to his father’s woes, continuing to focus his energies on acting,” Geraldo Rivera says in the show teaser.

“Woody was finishing up college and he amassed quite a body of work, he was a working actor, and getting some acclaim as well,” explains Jamilla Bey from the Washington Post.

But at the same time, his father was being accused of crimes left and right!

While Woody stayed away from Charles’ dark life of crime and murder, his partying lifestyle as a young star once got him arrested!

“That took the form of a drunken night of dancing in the street, making a spectacle of himself, and then when the police were called about the drunken dancer, Woody decided to run,” says Bey. “While he was arrested, Woody was able to avoid jail time by paying a fine.”

Geraldo Rivera’s Murder In the Family: Woody Harrelson airs Saturday, December 1 at 9 ET/PT on REELZ.
