'Bumbling' Boris Johnson Sussex Blunder: Ex-Prime Minister Admits 'Pathetic Attempt' at Keeping Prince Harry and Meghan Markle in Britain 'Failed'
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's explosive "Megxit" in early 2020 "competed with the pandemic" for headlines in Britain. Although the royal rebels decided to flee the Crown and the nation, Former Prime Minister Boris Johnson admitted to trying to prevent the huge royal scandal from unfolding.
"I failed to avert Megxit, but I did deliver Brexit," he told GBN's Camilla Tominey when referencing his initiation of the controversial measure for Britain to leave the European Union.
Johnson, who served as Britain's head of government from July 24, 2019, to September 6, 2022, two days before Queen Elizabeth II died, also revealed a phone call he shared with Harry. The chat lasted 20 minutes, and the ex-PM told Tominey that no aides were present in his 10 Downing Street office when the exchange occurred early that year. Although the talk was ultimately unsuccessful at preventing Megxit, Johnson admitted to thinking the pre-royal scandal duo were "brilliant."
He shared, "They [Meghan and Harry] came to an event we did for female education. They were brilliant, and she [Meghan] was particularly good and articulate on it. I got on well with both of them."
The former world leader had nothing but positive experiences with the Duke of Sussex in the years leading up to his and Meghan's fleeing from the U.K. "I also worked with Harry when he did his Invictus Games for disabled veterans in the Olympic Park," he added. "I thought, in a bit of pomposity, this national asset is leaving our country. I thought he, on the whole, could be a force for good so, I’m going to try and discourage him."
Johnson then bluntly shared, "I had a pathetic attempt at that. It didn’t work. I failed to avert Megxit, but I did deliver Brexit."
The "love him or h--- him Brexit PM" is currently on a media tour for his new autobiography titled Unleashed, which was labeled "the memoirs of a clown" by one U.K. outlet. In addition to Megxit, Johnson also wrote about his time with the late Queen and disclosed details about her health during the twilight of her reign.
He wrote that Her late Majesty "for more than a year, had a form of bone cancer and her doctors were worried that at any time she could enter a sharp decline."
Johnson also shared specifics about his final meeting with Elizabeth II, two days before her death. The gathering occurred at Balmoral Castle, only moments before Liz Truss "kissed hands" to become her final PM.

"She seemed pale and more stooped, and she had dark bruising on her hands and her wrists," Johnson further observed. "But her mind... was completely unimpaired. She still flashed that great white smile in its sudden mood-lifting beauty."
