Former Clinton Aide Doug Band 'Repeatedly Told Lawmakers He Could Not Recall' Epstein Interactions, Sources Say

A former top aide to Bill Clinton told lawmakers that he "could not recall" his involvement on key topics related to s-- offender Jeffrey Epstein, according to a new report.

Former Clinton aide Doug Band spoke before the House Oversight Committee on September 1, and multiple sources told ABC News that Band did not provide evidence or testimony that suggested the former president visited Epstein Island, despite telling Vanity Fair in 2020 that Clinton had visited the island.

According to the sources, Band said in his testimony that he could not recall why he made the claim to Vanity Fair back then.

Band first worked for Clinton as an intern in the mid-90s, then helped shape Clinton's post-presidential endeavors, such as the Clinton Foundation and the Clinton Global Initiative.

Band regularly emailed Epstein co-conspirator Ghislaine Maxwell between 2001 and 2004, two years before Epstein was first convicted of charges related to soliciting prostitution in 2006. The emails were flirtatious, with Band using pet names for Maxwell including "babycakes" and "booboo."

Band told the Oversight Committee that though he did not recall sending individual messages to Maxwell, an email found in the files belonged to him and no one else had access to it. He also claimed that he worked to protect Clinton from scandal after the first charges against Epstein were filed.

Republican House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer told reporters ahead of the meeting that Band’s testimony would focus on meetings he arranged between Clinton and Epstein, as well as his relationship with Maxwell.

Per sources, Band claimed he never met any women associated with Maxwell, never had sexual contact with her and did not talk to Epstein when he flew on his private jet.

Band previously told the New York Times that the flirtatious messages between himself and Maxwell happened when he was a "single man in his 20s," but did not extend to physical intimacy.

Band, now 54, is not accused of wrongdoing and voluntarily appeared before the Oversight Committee. His testimony was not recorded.

Clinton has also not been accused of wrongdoing, and he, Maxwell and Epstein have all denied that the former president ever visited Epstein’s infamous island.

"He never, absolutely never went. And I can be sure of that because there's no way he would have gone," Maxwell told Todd Blanche in 2025, when he was Deputy Attorney General.

Maxwell is serving a 20-year prison sentence for her role in facilitating Epstein's crimes.

Maxwell has previously discussed her relationship with Band in the years immediately following Clinton's presidency.

"I was part of the beginning process of the Clinton Global Initiative. And that was something that I helped with and that was me, and Epstein may have helped me help them," she said in the interview with Blanche.

"I started spending time with the former president and with Doug and his team," Maxwell said. "I had no purpose, really, other than I had — obviously offered something. I don't know, ideas."
