Lopez's ‘Diva’ Reputation

Former ‘Top of the Pops’ employee Gareth Davies alleged that Jennifer Lopez transformed her dressing room into an all-white space during her 2001 appearances.

According to former Top of the Pops employee Gareth Davies, Lopez made quite an impression during her appearances on the U.K. music program.

Davies, 51, worked as an assistant floor manager at England's Elstree Studios, where the BBC series was filmed throughout the 1990s and early 2000s. He recently told Zingo Bingo that Lopez "made some of the biggest demands backstage" and wanted her dressing room changed to match her personal style.

"The dressing rooms were all along this narrow corridor, so nothing special, really, quite old-fashioned. But for that small stretch of space, she made it completely her own," the music manager alleged.

According to Davies, Lopez had a very specific vision for the space.

"The best way to describe it is that she turned her dressing room entirely white," he continued. "At the time, I’m not sure where the fascination with white came from, but she wanted everything transformed."

The Presenter Studio CEO went on to describe just how far the transformation reportedly went.

"The whole room was covered from top to bottom, which was quite unusual. She didn’t paint it, she had plastic sheeting put up everywhere instead, so it created this striking, all-white environment,” he added.

Jennifer Lopez performed several of her biggest Y2K hits, including ‘I'm Real,’ ‘Play’ and ‘Love Don’t Cost a Thing,’ on the BBC series.

Lopez appeared on the BBC series several times in 2001, including a performance at the first Top of the Pops Awards in December of that year.

She also performed some of her biggest Y2K hits on the show's stage, including "I'm Real," "Play" and "Love Don’t Cost a Thing."

While Lopez's alleged backstage demands may have fueled her “diva” reputation, the star has long pushed back against the label.

During a 2016 interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Lopez said she never felt the description fit her.

“I got a moniker of being ‘the diva,’ which I never felt I deserved — which I don’t deserve," she said. “I’ve always been fascinated by how much more well-behaved [women] have to be than men."

Lopez also spoke out about her reputation during a 2001 press tour in Hong Kong, where she addressed claims that she was a prima donna. At the time, she also denied a wild gossip that she had insured her body for $1 billion.

"No, and I know that was a big rumor," she explained. "I actually saved the newspaper [reports] to show my kids one day, but it's not true. Sorry."
