Mount Whitney, at 14,505 feet, is the highest mountain in the contiguous United States and draws thousands of hikers each year. About 30,000 people attempt to reach the summit annually, mostly between May and November.
The mountain has two primary routes. The Mount Whitney Trail is roughly 22 miles round-trip with more than 6,000 feet of elevation gain. The Mountaineer’s Route is shorter at about 9.4 miles but is considerably steeper and more technically challenging.
The mountain can also pose serious risks, including altitude sickness, falls and brutally cold conditions later in the year.
Kalem’s death comes after several other fatal incidents on Mount Whitney.
Per reports, a solo hiker died earlier this year after continuing toward the summit when his companion turned back.
In another case, the body of 21-year-old Joseph Brambila was recovered after he went missing while attempting to scale the mountain.
