Kamala Harris is leaning into one of the internet's favorite moments from her political career.

The former vice president marked World Coconut Day on Tuesday, September 1, with an Instagram post nodding to her viral "coconut tree" remark, sharing a video of clips alongside a caption that riffed on the original quote.

"A day that exists in the context of all that came before it," she wrote. "Happy World Coconut Day!"

Harris' caption was a playful callback to the line that made the moment such a famous meme across the internet. The phrasing echoed her original remark about existing "in the context of all in which you live and what came before you," reworking it to fit the coconut-themed holiday. The accompanying video compiled clips tied to the meme, including impersonators and Saturday Night Live sketches.

The remark dates to a 2023 White House event. Speaking at a May 2023 swearing-in ceremony for a commission on educational opportunity for Hispanic Americans, Harris stressed the importance of understanding context and community, illustrating the point with something she said her mother used to tell her.

"You think you just fell out of a coconut tree?" Harris recalled her mother saying, before adding, "You exist in the context of all in which you live and what came before you." The clip circulated at the time, but didn't become a full-blown phenomenon until more than a year later.

The quote exploded online in July 2024. After former President Joe Biden ended his reelection bid and endorsed Harris, the coconut tree became an unlikely emblem of support for her candidacy, with the coconut and palm tree emoji spreading across social media. Democratic officials joined in, and Harris' campaign leaned into the imagery, at one point updating a social media bio to read "providing context."

The meme became part of a broader wave of internet culture surrounding her run, alongside a moment tied to musician Charli XCX's album Brat. Harris ultimately lost the 2024 election to President Donald Trump.

Tuesday's post shows Harris continuing to embrace the meme well after the campaign. She had previously nodded to it during her time in office, including in a December 2024 address to students, acknowledging the line that took on a life of its own.

Harris served as vice president from 2021 to 2025 and as a U.S. senator from California before that.
