President Donald Trump’s daughter-in-law Lara Trump is encouraging women to incorporate weightlifting into their fitness routines as they age, arguing that building muscle can help combat sagging skin.
"Lifting weights will not make you bulky," Lara wrote in the caption of a recent TikTok post, which featured a clip from "The Right View" podcast.
Pushing back on the idea that women who strength train will automatically become overly muscular, Lara went on to explain why she believes maintaining muscle mass becomes increasingly important as women get older.

"But the older we get, the more important muscle mass becomes," she continued, pointing to the role muscle plays in supporting the body as bones weaken.
The former Fox News contributor also acknowledged that there is an aesthetic component to maintaining muscle, bluntly telling listeners, "It doesn't look good to have saggy skin. You gotta fill it out with a little bit of muscle."
'A Little Effort Every Day Goes a Long Way'

Lara Trump shares her thoughts on weightlifting, aging and sagging skin.
Lara shared a clip from the conversation on TikTok, where she reiterated her stance on strength training.
"Strength training becomes even more important as we age, helping us maintain muscle and support our bones," she added in the caption. "A little effort every day goes a long way."
Lara, who frequently shares glimpses of her own fitness routine, has documented her 5 a.m. workouts, CrossFit sessions and triathlon training on social media.

Lara Trump says strength training becomes increasingly important with age — and has an aesthetic benefit, too.
While Lara, 43, advocates for weightlifting, a high-protein diet and ‘keeping your body guessing’ to build muscle, medical experts emphasize that loose or sagging skin is a normal physical result of significant weight loss and aging.
Skin laxity can be influenced by a number of factors, including age, genetics, the amount and speed of weight loss, sun exposure, smoking and pregnancy. As skin stretches over time, its collagen and elastin fibers can lose some of their ability to contract, making it more difficult for the skin to return to its previous shape.
Lara Trump’s Fitness Routine Has Drawn Mixed Reactions

For people who experience significant weight loss, excess skin can remain even after they have reached and maintained a healthier weight. While strength training can help build muscle beneath the skin and improve overall body composition, it cannot necessarily eliminate excess skin.
The amount of loose skin varies significantly from person to person, and its presence is not an indication that someone has failed to maintain their health or fitness. Treatment options for people who are bothered by excess skin can range from continued strength training to cosmetic procedures such as body-contouring surgery.
Lara's comments have also drawn criticism online, with some social media users calling her workout content ‘cringe’ or ‘performative’ and suggesting her fitness messaging is politically motivated.
