Leonardo DiCaprio Shares Rare Travel Photos as He Praises 'Incredible Efforts' to Protect the Amazon

Leonardo DiCaprio shared a rare glimpse of his recent trip through South America, praising the people working to protect the Amazon and other threatened ecosystems.

"The last years have seen incredible efforts by Brazil to protect the Amazon and other unique ecosystems, led by Indigenous Peoples, local NGOs and the government," DiCaprio wrote on Instagram. "I am proud to have visited some of the frontline defenders that my organization Re:wild supports."

The actor's post included photos from his journey, during which he met Indigenous leaders, conservationists, government officials and local organizations.

The visit brought DiCaprio face to face with some of the communities at the heart of Brazil's conservation efforts.

Among those he met were Chief Raoni Metuktire, a prominent Kayapó leader and longtime advocate for Indigenous rights, and leaders from the Yawalapiti people of the Upper Xingu.

DiCaprio's meetings highlighted the role Indigenous communities play in protecting land that has been cared for by generations of local residents.

The trip also included conversations with organizations working on the ground to preserve biodiversity and defend vulnerable ecosystems.

DiCaprio's environmental tour extended from local conservation work to Brazil's highest levels of government.

He met with President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and members of the Brazilian government in Brasília on September 2.

Their discussions focused on biodiversity, Indigenous territories and the protection of Brazil's ecosystems.

DiCaprio traveled through the Amazon, Pantanal and Cerrado during the trip, bringing attention to landscapes that differ dramatically but face significant environmental pressures.

The Pantanal is the world's largest tropical wetland, while the Cerrado is a vast tropical savanna covering a large portion of central Brazil.

The Amazon rainforest remains central to global conservation efforts, supporting extraordinary biodiversity and millions of Indigenous people. Re:wild describes the region as the largest tropical forest on Earth and works with partners to protect and restore it.

The Brazil trip adds to DiCaprio's longstanding environmental activism beyond his acting career.

He is a founding board member of Re:wild, which supports Indigenous peoples, local communities, conservation groups and governments working to protect wild places and species. The organization says DiCaprio has directed more than $100 million in philanthropic support toward environmental programs.

Re:wild has also supported conservation initiatives in the Brazilian Amazon, including efforts involving Indigenous and local communities.

DiCaprio's latest journey gives that work a more personal dimension, allowing the actor to meet some of the people carrying out the conservation efforts he has spent years supporting.
