Madelyn Cline Admits It Was 'Difficult' Working With Ex Chase Stokes on 'Outer Banks' After Their Split: 'We Had a Working Relationship'

Madelyn Cline opened up about playing a couple onscreen with her ex, Chase Stokes.

Talking to The Hollywood Reporter, Cline said, "There were moments when it was difficult, absolutely."

The two met and played lovers in Outer Banks when filming began back in 2019. While they became real-life partners by 2020, their union did not last long, and they broke up by 2021.

While her experience of playing a couple fresh off a breakup was hard, Cline also added, "But once the dust kind of settled, we were able to just revert to the friendship that we always had."

"At some point, you look at each other, and you’re like, ‘Are you ready to stop being miserable? Because I’m ready,’" she candidly admitted.

In a 2023 interview with Entertainment Weekly, Stokes opened up about their post-breakup, on-set dynamic.

He shared, "Mads and I have been working together now for 30 episodes, and we made a promise to each other before we even started dating that the work was always going to come first."

Cline agreed, adding, "We had a working relationship before we had a personal relationship, and our job from day one has always been to leave the show better than we found it."

Since their breakup, both Stokes and Cline have moved on in their respective love lives. While the actor got into an on-and-off relationship with Kelsea Ballerini for years, the actress is currently dating real estate agent Michael Reyes.

Onscreen, Cline's Sarah Cameron and Stokes' John B. Routledge shared their first kiss four episodes into season 1, which aired in April 2020. Four seasons later, they are still going strong in the series.

Offscreen, Stokes confirmed their relationship in June 2020, two months after dating rumors started swirling about them, around the time the series premiered on Netflix.

“Cats outta the bag,” he wrote on Instagram that month, along with a photo of the two enjoying a beach day together, per People.

“Well it’s about time,” their OBX costar, Jonathan Daviss, snarkily commented.

Cline, meanwhile, wrote in the comments section of her then-boyfriend's post, saying: "Topper punching the air rn" and "I've fallen and I cant get up."

Their relationship even earned the MTV seal of approval as they bagged the "Best Kiss" award at the 2021 MTV Movie & TV Awards, which they accepted with a kiss.
